Unfortunately, I can't read/ understand French and I can't find English translation of the series in America. It is a great way for children to learn about different times (link to History) and how people lived at the time. Although in a lot of books, a character learns from their mistakes. Sophie is always getting up to mischief, and it's delightful reading about it!Sophie's Misfortunes is a French children's classic. Les malheurs de Sophie were quite charming and I enjoyed the little more or less connected episodes. One or two I can understand, but this macabre procession of dead animals would have terrified me as a child. Children's books featuring bold and brave girls are both becoming easier for parents to find, and also cover a large range of ...La petite Sophie de Réan ne sait qu'inventer pour distraire ses après-midi. I would say, from 7 to 12 maybe. But it's pretty. i would have liked to have read it when i was younger, it's such a lovely children's book.So French and perhaps a little old-fashioned, but refreshingly so. Directed by Christophe Honoré. That said, this is also where the movie is the closest to the books of La Comtesse de Ségur.
This book is great as the children can relate to the stories despite it being in a different time.
Sophie often gets told off by her mother for things that have happened to her rather than she has done which children relate to very well. It is the first book in the trilogy and it is written very well. Since her birth, the little Sophie can not resist the temptation of the forbidden and what she loves most is to do stupid things with her cousin Paul. A girl allowed to keep no less than (serially) a bird, a squirrel, a cat, a donkey, a tortoise - effectively mistreating and killing them all!?! Was this review helpful?
There is nothing good in Sophie, she's like the spawn of the devil. This is a trilogy. Not to be missed! Can anyone tell me the ending of the series? This girl is like the devil's child, she kills everything she sees and she is just way too naughty (her parents are so laid back). I acted on this impulse because I remembered the near hysterical rage with which Simone de Beauvoir described these books which she considered to foul instruments of indoctrination for forming meek, submissive, catholic and bourgeois housewives.
Maybe it was a mistake.
Sophie gets into all amounts of trouble. 2012011411 I suppose it would do for the J M Barries and Lewis Carrols of this world, but they may not appreciate Disney-style hedgehogs, squirrel & frog who pop up from time to time - I certainly didn't. However, Sophie does not learn and makes the silly mistakes again.
It is funny and great to read to children or for children to read by themselves (maybe year 5 onwards though). This is the first book of a trilogy; its sequels are Good Little Girls (1858) and The Holidays (1859). This book is the single one that i will never let a child to read.
But i am pretty sure she was not just a naughty little human. I just did not enjoy it.
How on earth was this ever considered appropriate for children? I was worried for my poor Sophie's sensitive nature (she finds watching Nemo terrifying) but she seemed to enjoy this wSophie was very happy with this book and can't wait to read the sequel but I found I agreed with some of the other reviews posted on GoodReads. For whom is this film intended? You will thank me. I ended up pretty disappointed by Les Malheurs de Sophie. The author uses simple language to enter and express the mindset and logic of a four-year-old girl in a refreshing, charming manner, and I enjoyed this book as a result and look forward to reading more about Sophie and Paul in the next stories in the series. This book is great as the children can relate to the stories despite it being in a different time. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. All the children are well-produced and engaging. A year later, she is back in France with her horrible … Add Image. My problem is that Sophie did all sorts of naughty things and made all sorts of mistakes (perfectly normal is children's books) however, she never learnt. It was my first book in French, and I'm just happy that I was able to understand it. It has been translated into English it's called "Sophie's Misfortunes" definitely check other out (: I can't wait to re-read it and continue on with the trilogy xThis book was... interesting, to say the least. The author was described as a naughty girl and all of the stories are from her childhood.
